The novel ‘Oliver Twist’ narrates the story of an orphan named Oliver Twist, who after spending nine years of his life in a workhouse or poor house (a building where very poor people are sent to live and given work to do), escapes from there and travels to London where he comes across the Artful Dodger, leader of a gang of juvenile pickpockets. From there, Oliver Twist is led to the den of an elderly criminal trainer Fagin. Oliver Twist is naively unaware of their unlawful activities. Both Dodger and Fagin try their level best to drive young Oliver into the world of crime. In the midst of corruption anddegradation, the essentially passive Oliver remains pure-hearted. He steers away from
evil and is reunited with Mr. Brownlow, from whom he is separated by his conspirators. Mr. Brownlow helps Oliver
trace his family connections and finally adopts him as his son. Eventually, Oliver receives his reward heading for a peaceful life, surrounded by kind friends.
