It is a story of a family’s relationship with a haunted house and the ghost who resides there. The novel begins with a warning to the Otis family, who want to move into the Canterville Chase house. Mr Otis 1gnores the warning and moves his family into the house anyway. They are met with their first problem: a blood-stain on the carpet. The cause of the stain is attributed to the former owner, Sir Simon dde Canterville who killed his wife. Now he resides in the house as a ghost is unable to move to the next world. The author Oscar Wilde structures the novel based upon the appearances of the ghost. Throughout the novel, the ghost uses many disguises to terrify the Otis family, but to no purpose.
